Thomas Persons Hall stands as a testament to the power of preservation, community, and vision. Built in 1922, the building originally served as a school for the children of Jasper County until 1975. For generations, its classrooms shaped lives and its halls echoed with learning.
After closing as a school, the building entered a period of uncertainty. In 1979, the Jasper County Historical Foundation purchased the property with the intention of preserving it. Over the years, the Hall continued to serve the community in various ways, hosting churches, a clothing closet, pageants, productions, and other gatherings. Yet despite its continued use, the building steadily fell into deeper disrepair.
In 2005, an unexpected bequest from the estate of Thomas Persons provided the Foundation with a renewed opportunity. That gift allowed a long held vision of restoration to begin taking shape. What once seemed out of reach became possible.
Today, two of the building’s three levels have been renovated and restored to active use. Thomas Persons Hall once again serves as a center for arts, culture, and community events. While much progress has been made, the work is not complete. Restoration is an ongoing effort, approached one step at a time, as the Foundation continues its commitment to preserving this historic landmark for future generations.
